Rare brass Nuremberg dish, c.1500, often known as an alms dish. The central image is of the Virgin in Sole or Virgin in the Sun; the Blessed Virgin Mary is surrounded by the rays of the sun and stands on the moon. This image was very popular all across Europe encouraged by Pope Sixtus IV (1471-84) who is said to have granted an indulgence of 11,000 years for the saying of a special prayer before this image. This central image is surrounded by a related German inscription.
